Con-way Freight Celebrates Best Year for Safety since 2003
As Con-way Freight drivers get ready to kick off another season of state competitions leading up to the National Truck Driving Championships (NTDC), we have some great safety results to celebrate. The 2009 statistics are in and it turns out that last year was our safest since 2003. Under Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) standards, Con-way Freight finished the year with an accident frequency rate of .53, or one accident for every 1.9 million miles driven. That’s a 13.1 percent decrease from 2008, and well below the national average of .71.
The FMCSA definition of an accident is an incident where a vehicle becomes inoperable or causes a fatality or an injury that requires immediate medical assistance away from the scene. For internal reporting purposes, Con-way Freight defines an accident as a time when a company commercial motor vehicle makes contact with another vehicle, causing any kind of damage or injury (even a scratch or a broken mirror). Under that standard, our accident frequency rate came in at 8.87 per million miles driven — our lowest score since 2003. That 8.87 is 26 percent lower than our 2005 figure, and the number has been declining throughout the last five years.
How have we done it? By concentrating our efforts on two areas: additional defensive driving training and management focus. We’ve been able to keep managers thinking about safety by adding safety goals to our weekly operations scorecards. That helps us maintain constant attention on safety issues and driver performance as we continuously track results.
Safety is our first core value at Con-way Freight, so it’s exciting to be able to report progress like this. It’s also good news since we should have a lot of drivers eligible for the race to the NTDC this year — safe driving is a prerequisite for entering the competition. In 2009, we sent a record 88 drivers to the competition and ended up with the overall grand champion, as well as rookie of the year and two other drivers who won first place in their individual categories. This year, we hope even more drivers will participate.
Overall, 2009 also brought us a total of more than 70 industry safety awards. We had 32 fleet safety awards, 34 drivers of the month, three drivers of the year and two safety professionals of the year. That shows you the commitment to safety on the Con-way Freight team. We look forward to continued success with our safety program in 2010.
